What is a Coaching System Support Network?

Coaching System Support Networks (CSSNs) are groups of agencies committed to supporting the development of a world leading coaching system as part of a co-ordinated delivery system for sport. sports coach UK are leading the development of the CSSN in England by providing technical advice and guidance; and specific products and services.

Working in partnership with Governing Body of Sport and using the UK Coaching Framework as a key point of reference, the work of the CSSN will help contribute to:

  • enhanced quality of coaching at all stages of development
  • active, skilled and qualified coaches to meet demand

which in turn will lead to:

  • sustained and increased participation in sport
  • improved performances in sport

CSSNs will achieve this by:

  • Taking a strategic, needs led approach to the development of coaching
  • Developing and embedding quality systems to recruit, develop, deploy and retain coaches, coach developers and managers of coaches
  • Raising the profile of coaching and coaches
  • Influencing coaching policy and informing decision making through an evidence based approach

Coaching System Support Networks are:

  • Made up of a range of partner agencies with a common interest in, and commitment to, developing coaching including Governing Bodies of Sport, County Sport Partnerships, School Sports Partnerships, Local Development Agencies, Local Authorities, Higher and Further Education establishments, private coaching providers, other coach employers / deployers
  • Supported by key agencies such as sports coach UK, Sport England, The Youth Sport Trust, SkillsActive and the National Skills Academy
  • Supported by a Coaching Development Manager based within each County Sport Partnership
  • Part of a co-ordinated network at national, regional and local level
    Guided by the UK Coaching Framework

Development of the Coaching System Support Network will be guided by four key principles:

  • All work on the recruitment, deployment and support of coaches (and the support of National Governing Bodies and other agencies) should be needs led
  • Need should be jointly agreed, with sport specific participant and coach development models providing a core reference point
  • Resources and programmes should be aligned to support the identified need for key partners during the 'Delivering the Goals' phase of the UK Coaching Framework (2009-13)
    Common monitoring, key performance indicators and compliance processes should be agreed

Coaching System Support Networks will benefit coaching and partners by:

  • Developing of an effective and sustainable coaching system at a local level
  • Providing a clear approach to coach recruitment, development, deployment and retention
  • Providing effective mechanisms for communication, networking, knowledge transfer and resource allocation between all stakeholders
  • Maximising the impact of investment into coaching
  • Supporting the implementation of the UK Coaching Framework
  • Aligning with Governing Body and Home Country sports strategies
