NATIONAL COACHNG BURSARY PROGRAMME


The National Skills Academy, SkillsActive and sports coach UK have worked with Sport England in delivering a new £1.8 million programme to fund qualifications for aspiring sports coaches.

Applicants must have undertaken a course from the 1st January 2009 up to 31st March 2009, and they can apply for a rebate of up to 66% of the course costs.

NANCY OVENS COACHING BURSARY


Since 2006, SkillsActive has offered the Nancy Ovens Bursary on behalf of the Nancy Ovens Trust, to help a coach or leader working with young people in the sector to enhance their own skills and knowledge by taking part in studies, work experience or activities outside their day-to-day job.

Paid or Voluntary coaches working with young people

How much is availabl? Up to £2000 per candidate. The bursary offers an opportunity for applicants to tailor their own experience in a way that will be most beneficial for their career or voluntary activity. Applicants should ensure their proposal is intuitive and demonstrates their motivation and drive.

TROPHY TORCH TRUST


The aim of the bursary is to support volunteers who want to develop their coaching skills. The charity offers bursaries to assist with the cost of training volunteers from sports clubs.
Founded by Commander Collins (organiser of 1948 Olympic Torch relay)

Is it national, regional or local?
A NATIONAL initiative administered via the Torch Trophy Trust

Who can apply?
Individuals wishing to access courses but are restricted through lack of funding. A letter from the NGB must support the application.

How is it accessed?

How much is available?
Minimum of £100, maximum of £1000. The trust will only fund up to 50% of the total cost

SOUTH EAST COACHING BURSARY


Funding to upskill the coaching workforce via the UKCC (UK coaching certificate) as a result of the findings from the County Sport Partnerships (CSP) Workforce Plans in 2007, there was support for:

  • 1180 UKCC Level 2 bursaries
  • 130 UKCC Level 3 bursaries

The scheme is funded by European Social Funding (ESF) via the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). Three contract holders across the region administer the paperwork from ESF (Sussex Downs College, Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College and the Association of Learning Providers Surrey (ALPS).

Is it national, regional or local?
The bursary scheme is a REGIONAL programme administered by regional contract holders via national governing bodies.

In order to apply you must:

  • live or coach in South East region (Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire & IOW, Bucks and MK, Berkshire and Oxfordshire) assessed by the postcode of the applicant or of the club
  • be 19 + years old
  • be endorsed by the relevant NGB and / or CSP
  • hold sufficient pre requisite qualifications for either Level 2 or 3 UKCC
  • be currently employed as a coach or coaching voluntarily
  • not be in full time education (unless the course is completed during the summer holidays)
  • agree to the terms and conditions of the bursary

How is it accessed?
Coaches need to be identified by their NGB and book on a L2 or L3 course. On completion of the course and assessments, paperwork is returned to the contract holder and bursary funding is released to NGB.

How much is available?
A fixed grant of £200 per Level 2 qualification and £462 per Level 3 qualification.

Time Scales: Any courses need to be completed by October 2010; the programme ends in December 2010.

COACH, OFFICIAL & VOLUNTEER SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME - NOW ONLINE!


The Coach, Official and Volunteer Scholarship Scheme aims to increase the quantity and quality coaches, officials and volunteers available to support community sport in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

The application criteria is available on the Scholarship page, where you can also access the online application form. Please note that you must include the name and email address of a designated Lead Officer. This should be your local Sports Development Officer or county/regional National Governing Body representative.

The scheme will consider applications from candidates who wish to:-

  • undetake Level 2 & 3 Scholarships (Lead and Head Coaches)
  • undertake Minimum Standards for Deployment courses for coaches e.g. Safeguarding, Equity in Your Coaching, Coaching Disabled Performers and First Aid etc
  • undertake officiating courses

All applicants will have to register on Coaching Hampshire & IOW

When are scholarships awarded?

Application forms are accepted throughout the year, but awards are made quarterly in June, September, December and March.

The application deadlines for the remainder of this financial year are as follows: -

  • June Panel - endorsed application by Thursday 17th June 2010
  • September Panel - endorsed applications by Thursday 16th September 2010
  • December Panel - endorsed applications by Thursday 16th December 2010
  • March Panel - endorsed applications by Thursday 17th March 2011

The awards panel will meet no later than 7-days after after the application deadline. Successful applicants will be notified of their award no less than 14-days after the application deadline.
